Characteristics of life
Think about all of the objects that you wrote down were living or were once alive. What are the characteristics that all of these objects share? Write them down on scratch paper.
Finish going over the identity of each object.-
Part II (to be done as a group) For this activity assemble into a group of four to five hominids. Have each member present to the group each of the characteristics (or characteristic) that they came up with. After all have presented, come up with a group list of five characteristics of life that you all agree upon. Write these characteristics on a white board. When formulating this list ask yourselves the following two questions:
A. Do our characteristics in each list apply to all living things on Earth?
B. Does every living thing on earth have to have each characteristic in our lists to be considered a living thing?
If the answer is “no”, to either of these two questions, then your list is too narrow. Constructive debate is certainly encouraged!
4. Be ready to share your group's list (write on whiteboard) with the class in 20 minutes.
